What affects the price of a hair transplant?

The number of grafts has the greatest effect on the price, but it is not the only part of the calculation. A quote also has to account for the size of the treatment area, the quality of the donor hair, the procedure being used and the amount of surgical time required.

The area being treated

Restoring a small section of the hairline or filling the temple points requires fewer grafts than treating the complete frontal area. When hair loss extends through the mid-scalp or into the crown, more grafts and surgical time are normally required.

Crown work is planned differently from a frontal hairline because the grafts must follow the direction of the natural whorl. If the hairline and crown both require treatment, the available donor hair has to be divided carefully between them.

Your donor hair

Donor density determines how many follicular units can be removed without leaving the back or sides of the scalp visibly depleted. Hair thickness, curl and colour contrast also affect the amount of coverage that can be created with a given number of grafts.

This is why photographs can support an initial estimate but cannot replace a proper donor-area assessment. The final plan must be based on the hair that can be removed safely, rather than the number of grafts a patient would simply like to have.

FUE, FUT and DHI

FUE, FUT and DHI involve different methods of harvesting, preparing and placing grafts. Standard FUE starts from £2,999. FUT and DHI start from £3,999 because they involve different equipment, preparation and surgical time.

An unshaven or partially shaven procedure also takes longer than a fully shaven transplant. These procedures are generally limited to around 2,000 grafts in one session because each follicular unit has to be worked around the existing hair.

Large procedures and staged treatment

Extensive hair loss does not always need to be treated in a single operation. A larger case can be divided into separate stages so the donor area is protected and the areas that matter most are treated first.

The consultation is used to agree the treatment priorities, likely graft requirement and procedure before a written price is issued. You can also read our hair transplant donor-area guide for more information about donor assessment.

Hair Transplant Cost by Procedure

The procedure recommended will depend on your pattern of hair loss, donor hair and the area being treated. The starting prices below are followed by a full written quotation once your graft requirement has been assessed.

FUE hair transplant cost

FUE starts from £2,999. Individual follicular units are removed from the donor area using a small punch and placed into the planned recipient sites. This method does not leave a linear donor scar.

The price is based on the number of grafts required and the time needed to extract, prepare and place them. A procedure involving around 2,000 grafts will normally take a full surgical day.

FUT hair transplant cost

FUT starts from £3,999. A narrow strip of scalp is removed from the donor area before the follicular units are separated under magnification.

The price covers graft dissection, the clinical team, specialist equipment and closure of the donor area. FUT can be considered by patients who do not want the donor area shaved and by some patients with tightly curled or Afro-textured hair.

DHI hair transplant cost

DHI starts from £3,999. The extracted grafts are placed using a specialist implanter, giving the surgeon direct control over their depth, position and direction.

DHI generally takes longer than standard FUE and is normally used for smaller or medium-sized treatment areas where precise placement is required.

Beard transplant cost

A beard transplant starts from £2,999. Donor follicles are taken from the scalp and placed into the beard, moustache or sideburn area.

The number of grafts will depend on whether treatment is intended to fill a small patch, strengthen an existing beard or create wider coverage.

Eyebrow transplant cost

Eyebrow treatment may involve filling a small section or restoring one or both eyebrows. The quotation depends on the number of grafts, the donor method and the detail needed to follow the natural angle and direction of eyebrow growth.

Unshaven hair transplant cost

An unshaven or partially shaven transplant costs more than the equivalent fully shaven procedure because extraction and placement take longer. The maximum number of grafts is generally around 2,000 in one session.
